The whale shark petition
Whale sharks are an
Vulnerable species and are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
The whale shark is a highly intelligent and sociable animal, has a migratory range of 13,000 km and can dive to 980 metres. It is not possible for any manmade environment to cater to their requirements.
Whale sharks have never fared well in captivity. Two whale sharks died within five months of each other at the Georgia Aquarium.
Say NO to having whale sharks in captivity at the new Resorts World Sentosa. We are appealing to the Minister for Trade and Industry and Singapore Tourism Board to stop this act of exploitation for commercial purposes.
I believe that:
- Large migratory species such as whale sharks belong in the wild
- Displaying a whale shark in captivity is not an act of conservation
- Alternatives such as artificial shipwreck reefs could be explored
I appeal to the authorities:
- To stop Resort World Sentosa's import of whale sharks
- To build on Singapore's image as an environmentally-enlightened country by refusing the commercial exploitation of an endangered species
